Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands near the Thai border, of which essentially only 1 is inhabited. Two things set it apart from other tropical destinations. The first is its duty-free status — alcohol, chocolate and perfume cost a fraction of mainland Malaysian prices, which is why Malaysians themselves flock here too. The second is its geology: the rocks in the island's north are over 500 million years old, the oldest in Southeast Asia, and the whole archipelago is listed as a UNESCO Geopark. Tourism is concentrated in the southwest around Pantai Cenang beach, while the north and east remain mangroves, limestone cliffs and rice paddies. Above it all hangs the cable car up Mount Machinchang and the curved bridge suspended from it, one of the best-placed viewpoints in Asia. The airport is 8km from the main beach.

Sky Bridge and cable car

Oriental Village, 12 km

A 125-metre curved suspension bridge hung from a single pylon 700m above the rainforest, reached by cable car up Mount Machinchang. The cable car climbs at a gradient of over 45 degrees and is among the steepest in the world.

Tip: The summit is often in cloud, in which case you'll see nothing from the bridge — go right after opening for the best chance of a clear view. Cable car and bridge tickets are sold separately, and the bridge is also reached by an inclined lift or 300 steps.

Pantai Cenang

southwest

The island's main beach: 2km of light sand with a shallow entry into the water, backed by the full tourist infrastructure — restaurants, bars, water-sports rental stands and duty-free liquor shops.

Tip: The water here tends to be cloudy from sediment carried in by nearby rivers, which is normal and not pollution. It's the island's best beach for sunset; for swimming in clear water, head to Tanjung Rhu or take a boat to Pulau Payar.

Kilim Geoforest Park

northeast, 25 km

A mangrove system in the island's northeast, toured by boat between limestone cliffs covered in forest. Along the way are bat caves, floating fish farm pens, and Brahminy kites circling above the channels.

Tip: Turn down any tour where the guide feeds the eagles chicken skin — it's banned, and it turns the birds into beggars. Go at high tide, since the caves and channels are too shallow to reach at low tide.

Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

northwest, 14 km

7 natural pools stacked one above another, linked by smooth rock chutes that carry water 90m down the hillside. Legend says fairies once bathed in them. At the top you can swim and slide from one pool into the next.

Tip: 600 steps lead to the top, and it's a demanding 20-minute climb in the humidity — the lower viewpoint over the waterfall is right by the car park, but the pools are up top. Water can run low during the dry season from January to March.

Eagle Square

Kuah, 20 km

A 12-metre statue of a Brahminy kite with wings outstretched, in Kuah harbour and the island's symbol — the name Langkawi means "reddish-brown eagle" in Malay. Around it is a promenade with fountains and a view over the ferry terminal.

Tip: Combine a visit with a trip to the duty-free shops in Kuah right nearby, which have noticeably better prices than the beachside stalls. It looks best at sunset, with the sea behind it.

Tanjung Rhu

north, 30 km

The island's finest beach, on the northern coast: white sand, casuarina pines and limestone islets just offshore. At low tide the water recedes far enough to walk on foot to the neighbouring islet.

Tip: The beach is public, even though 2 luxury resorts line it — the entrance is by the car park at the end of the road, and no one can turn you away. Go at low tide for the chance to walk across to the small offshore island; times are posted at the entrance.

Lake of the Pregnant Maiden (Dayang Bunting)

Dayang Bunting island, by boat

A freshwater lake on a neighbouring island, separated from the sea by only a narrow strip of rock. Legend says it helps women with fertility, drawing pilgrims from across Malaysia. Swimming is from a wooden platform, and the lake holds a shoal of enormous catfish.

Tip: Reached by boat from Pantai Cenang or Kuah as part of a round-trip tour. It's a 10-minute uphill walk from the jetty to the lake, and macaques along the way will grab anything held loosely — keep your bag zipped.

Mahsuri's Mausoleum

inland, 12 km

The tomb of Mahsuri, a girl said to have been unjustly executed for adultery in the 18th century, who cursed the island for 7 generations as she died. Her blood is said to have run white as proof of her innocence. The grounds include a museum of a traditional Kedah village.

Tip: The legend matters to the island's identity — the curse is treated as an explanation for why Langkawi lagged behind until the late 20th century. The site is small, and half an hour is enough; it pairs well with a trip to the nearby rice paddies.

Gunung Raya

The island's highest peak, at 881m, reached by a paved road running all the way to a viewing tower at the summit. The road climbs through rainforest home to macaques, dusky langurs and hornbills; on a clear day the view stretches as far as the Thai coast.

Tip: The road has 300 bends, so don't attempt it on a scooter without experience. The summit tends to cloud over in the afternoon, so go in the morning; hornbills are most often spotted on the verge around the halfway point.

Areas and districts, matched to the kind of trip you are taking

Pantai Cenang

Best for: a first stay with everything close by

The main tourist beach, with the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, bars and duty-free shops. Everything is within walking distance, and it's the closest base to the airport. It's also the island's noisiest spot, and the water off the beach tends to be cloudy from river sediment.

Pantai Tengah

Best for: a quieter version of Cenang

A continuation of the main beach beyond a rocky headland, noticeably quieter, with mid-range and upscale hotels and better restaurants. It's a 10-minute walk into the bustle of Cenang. The most sensible compromise for infrastructure without the noise.

Kuah

Best for: shopping and ferries

The island's main town, with the harbour serving ferries to the mainland and Thailand, and the biggest duty-free shops. It has no usable beach, so people come here to shop and move on. Accommodation is the cheapest on the island.

Tanjung Rhu and the north

Best for: luxury resorts and the finest beach

The northern coast, with a white beach, limestone islets and 2 large resorts. Total calm and the cleanest water on the island. Without a car or a hotel transfer you can't get anywhere from here, and there's nowhere to go in the evening outside the resort grounds.

Getting around

From the airport

Langkawi International Airport lies 8km from Pantai Cenang and receives domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur and Penang, plus direct flights from Singapore. From many European cities it takes 1 or 2 connections, typically routed through the Gulf and Kuala Lumpur. The alternative is a ferry from the mainland — 1.5 hours from Kuala Kedah, just under 3 hours from Penang. A direct international catamaran runs from the Thai island of Koh Lipe in season.

Around town

Langkawi has no public transport — buses are practically non-existent, and the only options are taxis, Grab and your own vehicle. Taxis run fixed rates by zone, posted at the airport and the harbour; Grab works but means a long wait outside the tourist area. Car rental here is exceptionally cheap, around MYR 90 a day, and given the island's size and scattered attractions, it's worth it. A scooter is cheaper, but the road up Gunung Raya is demanding.

When to go

The best period is from December to March: dry, calm seas and the lowest humidity. April and May are the warmest months, with short afternoon storms. From August to October is the wettest stretch of the year, with rain nearly every day, though usually brief and in the afternoon — the sea tends to be cloudy and trips to Pulau Payar get cancelled. Temperatures stay nearly constant year-round at around 31°C, and the sea runs 28–30°C.

Food & drink

Langkawi cooks Malay food with a strong Thai influence from its neighbour — sour and spicy flavours are more common here than in the rest of Malaysia. The staples are nasi lemak for breakfast, laksa for lunch, and grilled fish, ikan bakar, for dinner, picked from the ice and charged by weight. The best value comes from the pasar malam night markets, held in a different part of the island each evening — Tuesday in Kedawang, Thursday in Cenang. Alcohol is cheaper here than anywhere else in Malaysia thanks to the duty-free status.

What to try

Nasi lemak

Rice cooked in coconut milk with pandan, served with spicy sambal paste, dried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and egg. Malaysia's national dish and the most common breakfast, sold wrapped in a banana leaf in the morning.

Laksa

A noodle soup that takes a different form in every state — in the north it's the sour, fish-based asam laksa, elsewhere a creamy coconut curry laksa. Order wherever you see a queue of locals; the gap in quality is vast.

Ikan bakar

A whole fish coated in sambal paste, wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled over charcoal. In seaside villages it's picked from the ice and charged by weight — ask the price per kilo before you order.

Roti canai

A layered fried flatbread of Indian origin, served with a bowl of dal or fish curry for dipping. A breakfast costing 2 ringgit, made at the round-the-clock mamak eateries found all over Malaysia.

Satay

Grilled chicken or beef skewers with peanut sauce, ketupat rice cakes and raw onion. Ordered by the 10-skewer portion, and it's an evening dish — most stalls don't have the grill fired up during the day.

Char kway teow

Wide rice noodles fried over a fierce flame with prawns, lap cheong sausage and bean sprouts. The mark of a good version is the smoky wok hei flavour, which cheap stalls can't manage.

Cendol

Shaved ice with coconut milk, gula melaka palm sugar, and green rice-flour noodles. It tastes better than it looks, and it's the best thing to order in the midday heat.

Teh tarik

Strong black tea with sweetened condensed milk, poured between 2 containers from a height until it froths. Ordered with every meal, and it costs just a few ringgit at a mamak eatery.

Tap waterTap water is treated, bottled is common — Tap water is treated but not recommended to drink straight from the tap due to old pipework — locals boil it first. Bottled water costs around 2 ringgit a bottle in shops, and hotel rooms routinely include a kettle. Ice in drinks is safe, as it's produced centrally.

TippingTipping isn't customary in Malaysia and nobody expects it. Mid-range and upscale restaurants add a 10% service charge and 6% tax to the bill, tallied at the end — so menu prices aren't final. At cheap eateries you pay the exact amount, rounded only to the nearest coin.

SafetyMalaysia is among the safest countries in Southeast Asia, and violent crime is rare even against foreigners. The real risks are natural: strong rip currents on open beaches, jellyfish from April to October, and macaques, which systematically steal food from resort rooms and aren't afraid of people — keep windows shut. The islands have no hospital with proper equipment, so a serious injury means transport to the mainland by boat or helicopter; travel insurance covering repatriation matters more here than elsewhere. Malaria isn't a risk on the tourist islands, but dengue fever is, so repellent is worth packing.

Opening hoursShops in the resorts are open from 9am to 10pm, and shopping centres from 10am to 10pm. Around midday on Fridays, many close for an hour and a half for Friday prayers, especially in smaller towns in the north and east. Beachfront restaurants close around 11pm. Island shops tend to open mornings only outside the main season.

Customs & etiquetteMalaysia is a Muslim country with large Chinese and Indian minorities, so customs vary depending on where you are. The left hand is considered unclean — food, money and gifts are passed with the right. Mosques require bare feet and covered hair for women, and robes are usually available to borrow at the entrance. Swimwear belongs on the beach or by the pool, not in a village — nobody minds in the resorts, but it matters in a Muslim village. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is avoided, though the restriction doesn't apply to tourists.

A marine park south of Langkawi with the best underwater visibility in the area — the water off Langkawi itself is cloudy from river sediment, but here it's clear. Snorkel straight off the beach among fish used to people. Trips are often cancelled during the rainy season.

Penang and George Town

An island with a UNESCO-listed colonial town, Chinese temples, street art and the best street food in Malaysia. The ferry from Kuah runs once or twice a day, and it's a tight fit for a single day — better as an overnight trip.

Koh Lipe, Thailand

50 km · 1h 30min by catamaran

A small Thai island with white beaches and coral reefs in Tarutao National Park, reached from Langkawi by a direct international catamaran in season. It's a border crossing, so you'll need a passport and should expect stamps on both sides.

Why is alcohol cheap on Langkawi?+

The island has held duty-free status since 1987, covering alcohol, chocolate, perfume and kitchenware. Beer costs roughly a third of the price on mainland Malaysia. The widest selection and best prices are in the shops in Kuah, not the stalls near the beaches.

Is the water at Pantai Cenang clean?+

It's often cloudy, but that's not pollution — it's sediment washed in by the surrounding rivers and mangroves. Swimming is perfectly safe. Anyone after crystal-clear water for snorkelling should head to Tanjung Rhu in the north, or take a boat to Pulau Payar Marine Park.
