Discover Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island: roughly eighty kilometres long, lying in the Gulf of Thailand a few dozen kilometres from the Cambodian coast. In a few years it has gone from a fishing island to a tourist destination with an international airport, theme parks and five-star resorts, but most of it is still covered in jungle and national park. The beaches on the west have fine white sand and calm water, while the east is wilder and rough in the rainy season. The island is known for its nước mắm fish sauce, black pepper and sim-berry spirit, and for sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand. The best season is from November to April, when it is dry, the sea is calm and the temperature is around thirty degrees. Czech citizens can enter Vietnam without a visa for forty-five days, so a short holiday with a connection in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is practical.

What to see

The places worth your time in Phu Quoc, and what to expect at each

Sao Beach (Bãi Sao)

Sao Beach (Bãi Sao)

southeast

The island's prettiest beach in the southeast: fine white sand, turquoise water and coconut palms leaning over the shore. The beach is long and the water shallows gently, so it suits children. There are beach bars with loungers, but part of the beach is left free.

Tip: Arrive before ten, before the tour buses arrive; in the afternoon shade is found only near the bars. During the rains (May to October) the sea on the east can be choppy, so the dry season is the time to go.

half a day
Long Beach (Bãi Trường)

Long Beach (Bãi Trường)

west

A twenty-kilometre beach on the west coast, lined with hotels, restaurants and beach bars. The sea is calm and shallow and the sunsets are among the best in Vietnam. It also has the densest services and transport to the town of Duong Dong.

Tip: The best sunset spot is around Ong Lang and in front of the hotels at the second kilometre. From Friday to Sunday there are many more people in the evening.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
half a day
Dinh Cau Temple

Dinh Cau Temple

Duong Dong

A small temple and lighthouse on a rock at the river mouth in Duong Dong, dedicated to the sea goddess whom fishermen revere. A bridge leads to the rock, with views of the harbour and boats. Entry is free and the temple is open all day.

Tip: Go after sunset, when lanterns light up and the harbour is full of boats. Next to it is the night market with grilled seafood.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
30 min
Duong Dong Night Market

Duong Dong Night Market

Duong Dong

A market in town with dozens of stalls selling grilled seafood, fish skewers, fruit, souvenirs and fish sauce. It opens in the evening until midnight and is among the best places to taste Phu Quoc. Prices for souvenirs are negotiable.

Tip: Come around six, before queues form, and choose stalls with fresh, still-live seafood. For seafood, agree the price per kilogram in advance.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
1–2 hrs
Phu Quoc Prison

Phu Quoc Prison

south of the island

A former prison from the French era, dating to 1949 and later a prisoner-of-war camp during the war, now a museum. Wax figures show the cell conditions and interrogations. It is a reminder of the island's history that often surprises tourists.

Tip: Go with care, as the exhibition can be heavy for children. A taxi or scooter gets you there; arrange the return trip in advance.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
1 hr

Phu Quoc National Park

north

A reserve covering most of the north of the island, registered as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, with tropical forest, mangroves and hills. Macaques, squirrels and rare birds live here. Trails lead to waterfalls, but the way is slippery in the rainy season.

Tip: For trekking the dry season suits; in the wet season trails are muddy. Bring repellent and sturdier shoes and ask your hotel which trail is passable at the moment.

Admission:
a few tens of thousands VND
Time needed:
half a day
Hon Thom Cable Car

Hon Thom Cable Car

An Thoi

One of the longest sea-crossing cable cars in the world, running from the south of the island to the Hon Thom group. The ride takes about twenty minutes and offers views of coral reefs and many boats below. On the island there is a water park and a beach.

Tip: Go early in the morning, before the midday heat and queues. The ticket includes entry to the area, but attractions inside are paid separately.

Admission:
about 600,000 VND
Time needed:
half a day
Sunset Town and the Kiss Bridge

Sunset Town and the Kiss Bridge

An Thoi

An artificial town in the south of the island, built in the spirit of the Italian Riviera, with pastel houses, canals and a bridge curving over the sea that is the island's most photographed spot. In the early evening it lights up and music plays. Entry is free.

Tip: The best time is half an hour before sunset, when the bridge is lit. On Saturday and Sunday it is busy and car parks are often full.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
1–2 hrs

Ham Ninh Fishing Village

east

A village on the east coast with a wooden pier, fishing boats and restaurants on stilts serving the local Ham Ninh crab. The price is by weight and crabs are chosen live from a cage. The village is about ten kilometres from Duong Dong.

Tip: Arrive before two in the afternoon and agree the price per kilogram in advance. After the meal walk the pier, as in the morning boats go out to fish.

Where to stay

Areas and districts, matched to the kind of trip you are taking

Duong Dong and Long Beach

Best for: first visit and transport

The island's main town and the west beach, with the most hotels, restaurants and bars. There is a night market, a harbour and easy transport to the airport, though the beach is less calm than in the south. The best choice for a first visit and a short stay.

Ong Lang

Best for: calm and a relaxed atmosphere

A calmer strip of coast north of town with small resorts, bamboo bungalows and a hippie atmosphere. The beach is narrower and stonier, but the sea is calm. Suits couples and travellers who do not want crowds.

Bai Dai and the north

Best for: big resorts and entertainment

A long beach in the northwest with luxury resorts, the VinWonders theme park and a zoo. Hotels often have their own beach and transport is by shuttle. Suitable for families and luxury.

An Thoi and Bai Sao

Best for: the south, beaches and islands

The southern part of the island with the port of An Thoi, Sao Beach and Sunset Town. There are boutique hotels, pools with views and boat trips to the islands. A good choice for those who want beautiful beaches and do not mind the distance from town.

Getting around

From the airport

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is about ten kilometres from the town of Duong Dong, served from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other Vietnamese cities. From Europe it is reached via Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Bangkok, and in the winter season sometimes by charter. Taxis, Grab and hotel shuttle buses run from the airport. You can also reach the island by fast boat from Ha Tien and Rach Gia.
