Discover Lignano Sabbiadoro

Lignano Sabbiadoro is the largest resort in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, on the Adriatic coast between Venice and Trieste, on a peninsula between the sea and the Marano lagoon. Eight kilometres of golden beach, which gave the resort its name, are divided into three parts: Sabbiadoro with its pedestrian zone and the Terrazza a Mare, the wooded Pineta, and the Riviera with its marinas, golf and zoo. Next to Bibione across the Tagliamento river it is the second big resort for Czechs, Slovaks, Austrians and Germans, and from June to September hundreds of thousands of guests come. It is far livelier than Bibione: it has the oldest water park in Italy, a zoo, mini-golf, shopping streets and in summer music in the evening. From Prague it is about seven hundred and fifty kilometres by car via Austria, and Trieste airport is only sixty kilometres away. Outside the season the resort is nearly empty, hotels and restaurants close and the beach belongs to the locals.

The places worth your time in Lignano Sabbiadoro, and what to expect at each

Lignano Sabbiadoro Beach

Lignano Sabbiadoro Beach

whole resort

An eight-kilometre beach of fine golden sand with a gradual entry into the sea and rows of rented umbrellas and loungers. The beach is divided into several sections, each with its own operator and facilities. The water is warm in August at around twenty-six degrees and often calm.

Tip: In August reserve an umbrella in advance; prices rise with proximity to the sea. Free sections, 'spiaggia libera', are at the edge near Pineta and the harbour.

Admission:
free, loungers from €25
Time needed:
half a day
Terrazza a Mare

Terrazza a Mare

Sabbiadoro

The symbol of Lignano: a pier with a large terrace that juts out to sea beside the pedestrian zone and holds a restaurant, a bar and events. In the evening music plays and from the end of the pier there is a view of the whole coast. It is a popular place for weddings and for an evening stroll.

Tip: In the evening it is busiest, and at weekends tickets for a concert have to be booked ahead. Before sunset you can have an Aperol here and photograph the coast.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
1 hr

Aquasplash

entrance to Lignano

Italy's oldest water park, standing here since 1980 as the first in the country. It has slides for children and adults, wave pools, hydromassage and playgrounds. It is at the entrance to Lignano and in summer it is open from morning to early evening.

Tip: Online tickets are cheaper than on the spot and midday is busiest. Arrive before ten, and bring sun cream and your own towels.

Admission:
from €25
Time needed:
half a day
Parco Zoo Punta Verde

Parco Zoo Punta Verde

Lignano Riviera

A zoo on ten hectares in a bend of the Tagliamento river, in Lignano Riviera, home to over a thousand animals of two hundred species. You find elephants, giraffes, lions and tropical birds, in enclosures adapted to the animals' needs. It suits families with children and takes half a day.

Tip: Come in the morning, when the animals are more active and it is less hot. There is shade, but bring drinks, as summer is very hot.

Admission:
about €18
Time needed:
half a day
Pineta and Parco del Mare

Pineta and Parco del Mare

Lignano Pineta

The green middle part of Lignano with pines, walking paths and games for children, which also has the popular Treno di Lignano Pineta, a little tourist train. Hotels are scattered among the trees and the beach is calmer. Parco del Mare is a park by the beach where families gather.

Tip: The train runs a loop along the paths and suits children. By bike a ride through the woods is pleasant even at midday, when there is shade.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
1–2 hrs
Marano Lagoon

Marano Lagoon

north of Lignano

A protected lagoon north of Lignano with islets, reed beds and fishermen's huts called casoni. Guided boat trips run along canals and stop at islets where a fish lunch is served. The lagoon is home to many bird species and offers a calm contrast to the beach.

Tip: Book a trip with an official operator and set out early, before the midday heat. The humidity means mosquitoes, so bring repellent.

Admission:
trip from €25
Time needed:
half a day

Marina Uno and Lignano Riviera

Lignano Riviera

The largest yacht harbour in Lignano Riviera, with restaurants, shops and views of the boats. Hundreds of yachts berth here, and nearby are a golf course and residences. In the evening it is calmer than in the centre.

Tip: In the evening it suits dinner by the water; book in advance. You reach the harbour along the cycle path from the centre in half an hour.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
1–2 hrs

Viale Gorizia and Shopping

Sabbiadoro

Lignano's main pedestrian street, with hundreds of shops, restaurants and ice-cream parlours, where the resort's evening life takes place. You find fashion boutiques, souvenirs and markets. It is a place for a stroll, dinner and ice cream.

Tip: The best time is after seven in the evening, when the shops open and music plays in the street. Prices are higher than in the side lanes.

Admission:
free
Time needed:
1–2 hrs

Ferry to Bibione

Tagliamento mouth

A ferry across the Tagliamento mouth links Lignano with Bibione on the other bank, in the neighbouring region of Veneto. The crossing takes about twenty minutes and carries pedestrians and cyclists. In summer it runs several times a day.

Tip: Buy the ticket at the pier and watch the timetable for the return crossing. Take your bike, so you can ride the other bank along the cycle path.

Admission:
about €10
Time needed:
half a day

From Prague it is about seven hundred and fifty kilometres and seven to eight hours via Austria on the A9, A10 and then the A23 towards Udine and the A4. A digital vignette is needed in Austria and tolls in the tunnels. From Brno it is an hour less. It is best to drive at night or on Thursday.
